Ayodele Fayose, former Ekiti State governor and leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has expressed regret over the crisis rocking the party, calling it “embarrassing and unnecessary”.
According to a report by TheNewsGuru.com (TNG), former Governor Fayose said the PDP as a political party is defunct and the crisis rocking the party has gone too far, insisting that efforts at reconciliation are too slow.
Fayose told Channels Television’s Sunday Politics that suspensions and counter-suspensions within the party have reduced the party’s standing to such an embarrassing level that he says He said there was no need.
“The current situation in our party makes suspension and counter-suspension a mockery, especially at that level of leadership. And sadly, the current situation within the party now makes the party’s position the most unnecessary. “It has been brought down to a level of embarrassment.”
The former Ekiti governor said the current crisis in the main opposition party was a result of the defeat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 general elections. He said divine intervention was needed for the PDP to reunite as a strong political party challenging for the highest political position in the country.
“Today, the mismanagement and arrogance of some people is plaguing the party, and it is said that when the head is sick, the whole body is gone. Therefore, divine intervention is required for this party to be reunited. It will take a miracle,” Fayose said.
A Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday restrained the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) from removing Umaru Damagum as acting national chairman of the party, saying Fayose had tied the hands of all party members with the ruling. Ta.
Asked if Damagum should step aside, Fayose said it doesn’t matter what he proposes at this point because the court has decided on the matter.
Moreover, the former governor also debunked reports that he had expressed interest in becoming the national chairman of the PDP, saying the position was too hot for his age.
He said he has no intention of holding any position within the party now or in the foreseeable future.
“Yesterday, a report was submitted stating that I have declared myself as the national chairman. That is an irresponsible statement that did not come from me and will never come from me.
“I no longer want to be a member of the party and I don’t want any kind of appointment. I never said that I was declaring myself the national chairman of the party, which is not allowed. , that seat is too hot for my age right now. I don’t want that and I never will,” Fayose said.
He further added, “The Public Relations Secretary of the PDP has suspended another person in the party and vice versa. Legal Adviser. So where is the party? The party is over!
“This crisis is unfortunate. It’s very, very unfortunate. I believe this problem has crossed the Rubicon. It has gone far. Even if we want to solve this problem, how do we restore trust? Is it possible? Therefore, I would like to believe that we are still a long way from seeking reconciliation.”
