A former Ebonyi State chieftain, Abia Onyike, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress in the state.
Naija News reports that Onike, a former National Vice-President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, announced his decision to leave the PDP at a ceremony held in Owutu Edda constituency in Edda Local Government Area of the state on Wednesday.
Mr. Onike said he is leaving the party because he believes that Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru has restored good governance and is therefore joining the APC.
He said: “My decision to join the APC is due to the need to build a strong alliance to support Governor Nwifuru who has taken steps to restore good governance and inclusive politics in Ebonyi State. ”.
“Politics is local and we are driven by our own development aspirations in the state. I am committed to maintaining the current peaceful atmosphere prevailing in the state under Governor Nwihuru. We are joining other progressive forces in the state to strengthen this.”
The Chairman of the APC in Owutu-Edda Constituency, Oko Ogbuagu, while welcoming Mr. Onike to the party, said his addition would enhance its fortunes in future elections.
he said: “Onike is a tested man. He is a man of the people and his participation in the party will enhance the party’s fortunes in future elections.”
