Former senator Ita Enin recommended that the federal government ban the import of agricultural machinery and inputs to encourage local production by domestic engineers.
Enan gave this advice on Wednesday in his keynote address at the 37th International Conference and Annual General Meeting of the Nigerian Society of Mechanical Engineers in Uyo.
He said Nigerian engineers have the capacity to produce machinery and materials for mechanized agriculture, which will improve food production in the country.
The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the theme of the conference was innovative technologies for sustainable food production and climate change management.
Ennan, a former special assistant to former President Muhammadu on Niger Delta issues, said it was now time for all states and local governments to use available land in their states for food production instead of waiting for oil money. This is the best time to use it.
“The Federal Government prohibits the importation of agricultural machinery and inputs from other countries as Nigerian engineers may provide machinery or improvised machinery for agricultural work in Nigeria. , should actually be banned.
“The federal government should end all measures to encourage food imports and deploy food import regulations and enhancers for domestic emergency food production.

“There should be a total ban,” Henin said.
He called on Nigerians to embrace and return to agriculture, explaining that it is the only way to increase food production without relying on food imports.
He said it is much better and economically advantageous to produce rice locally rather than spending money and time on imports.
He further called on the government to expedite action towards establishing a Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, similar to the creation of the Ministry of Oceans and Blue Economy from the Ministry of Water Resources to promote livestock production in the country.
Henin also called on governments at all levels to deploy the research results and inventions of engineers to promote agriculture, citing China’s experience in facing economic challenges over the years.
“Mechanical Engineers Ready to Bring Solutions to Food Security”
Earlier, the National President of the Nigerian Society of Mechanical Engineers, Alhassan Mohammed, described the theme as pertinent as it has influenced both their profession and the world.
Mr. Mohammed said that as the world grapples with the challenges of food security and climate change, mechanical engineers are poised to play a key role in finding solutions.
“This gathering provides a platform for us to exchange ideas, share knowledge and build partnerships that will lead to further progress in these areas,” he said.
He also said the institution has made great strides in providing professional growth opportunities over the years.
