Ghanaian media personality and talent manager George Men Sablitton highlights the important role the label plays in helping musicians gain global recognition and win big awards like the Grammy Awards.
Speaking in the chat on Channel 1 TV, George, former manager of Camido, shared concerns about Ghana’s continued absence from the list of Grammy Award winners. He believes Ghana needs a better music industry structure that focuses on promotion and marketing, not just raw talent.
He used Nigerian singer Tems as an example, noting that he won the best African music performance at the 67th Grammy Awards, defeating stars like Burna Boy and Yemi Alade.
According to George, Nigerian artists are internationally successful as record labels and managers invest in marketing and promotion. He believes Ghanaian musicians are talented, but there is a lack of support and industry structure to compete on the world stage.
“Talent doesn’t matter. In Nigeria, music executives spend money on promotions, but in Ghana we focus solely on talent. People only talk when our musicians are around. , in Nigeria, the team works hard to relate artists around the world,” Britton explained.
Tems’ Grammy Awards won as evidence, and George urged Ghanaian artists and industry leaders to adopt a more strategic approach to music promotion, like Nigeria. It is unclear whether Ghana will make these changes, but debates about building a stronger music industry are growing.
