Osun Governor Ademora Adeleke met the top British diplomats and accused IGP Kayode Egbetokun, a police inspector, of enforcing and imposing illegality on the provincial council.
Naija News reports that this is known in a statement by a spokesman on Wednesday by Osun State Governor Malam Olawale Rashid.
Adereke has collaborated with all Progressive Congress (APC) to denounce the police bosses in order to illegally occupy Osun local government.
Speaking to British diplomats led by Deputy High Commissioner Johnny Baxter, the governor said, “It’s unfortunate and harmful to democracy that police inspectors conspire with the APC to enforce non-existent court orders.” This is a serious threat to Nigerian democracy.”
Reaffirming Saturday’s peace and preparations for fair elections, Adereke said that Osun, a peaceful nation, is attacked by security forces who are busy helping to violate the democratic process rather than protecting the rule of law. He said he is facing the
He said, “You are in my state at a critical time in our political life. We face existential threats to democratic lives from those who should protect democracy. We made our best efforts to ensure peace with the unfolding local government questions. I instructed members of the political class to stay away.
“However, the opposition, supported by the police, moved forward to break into the local government’s office. The security men openly supported them to enforce illegality.”
“Nevertheless, our local government elections are being held on Saturdays, our people are ready for elections, and democracy cannot be allowed to be destroyed.
“We are calling on the diplomatic community to take wise notes on the ongoing democratic rape in Osun State. We are particularly cautious about the negative role of security agents in the crisis. All. stakeholders must adhere to the democratic rule of law, the governor told the visiting diplomat.
He told the diplomats that Osun had made great strides in a variety of fields.
Adeleke added: “Infra’s deficit has decreased by 40%, reduced state debt by 40%, attended worker welfare and registered pensioners in the state’s health insurance system.”
The governor further told the delegation that Osun had liberalised the ease of the business environment and harmonised taxation along with a 45-day window for issuing certificates of occupancy.
British Deputy Director Johnny Baxter, in his remarks during his visit, underscored the importance of the democratic process and the rule of law.
He urged all political actors to prioritize peace and dialogue over conflict.
“Nigeria is an important UK partner and encourages all stakeholders to maintain democratic values, ensure peaceful governance and respect legal institutions.
“It’s important that law enforcement remains neutral and that political conflicts are resolved through legal channels,” Baxter said.
Baxter was accompanied by her political secretary, Katherine Fernandez, and senior political adviser, Wel Adebajo, on the trip.
