Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, on Saturday commended the peaceful conduct of local government elections held in 44 local government bodies in the state.
After voting in Gwale Local Government Area, the governor addressed newsmen and thanked the Electoral Commissioners of other states for their assistance in monitoring the elections.
Yusuf said the elections held in 484 wards in 44 local governments were the freest in Kano’s history.
He assured that those elected will serve the interests of the people and that his administration will ensure good governance.
The governor commended the Chairman and staff of the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KAANSIEC) for ensuring the conduct of “free and fair elections in Kano”.
“There should be no impunity when it comes to elections, and people should be able to vote for their mandate,” he said.
“I appeal to the judiciary to remain neutral when it comes to elections. Even though the Kano state government is the only government that was formed under the platform of the NNPP, I do not believe that our judiciary is partisan. Things are not very good. We should not be intimidated. People of Kano State are peace-loving people, but if they are pushed they can react against the wall.
“We have seen what happened in Rivers and have taken proactive steps to prevent a similar scenario from happening in Kano.”
Governor Yusuf also urged the opposition to accept defeat, citing the party’s strong support from voters.
He added, “Since we have the advantage in terms of voter support, I would like to appeal to the opposition parties to always accept defeat.”
