Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has made it clear that his administration prioritized security during his tenure.
He called on the current leadership to take proactive steps to counter the growing security threats plaguing the country.
The politician expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation in Nigeria during a visit to Bauchi on Sunday where he met with the Emir, Dr. Rilwanu Adamu.
He argued that the cooperation of local leaders is needed to address insecurity as many criminals live within the community.
The elder statesman advised that the best way to get rid of perpetrators is to practice community policing.
His words were: “Throughout my term in office, we have prioritized the safety of lives and property across the country and now we urgently need to do something about this.
“The best form of security is community policing because everyone in the community knows their neighbors. This makes it very easy to identify bad eggs.”
“I am calling on traditional organizations to intervene within their own environments and encourage community policing to reduce the prevalence of crime.
“During our national service, we did everything jointly and took decisions together to unify our focus. My brother, Ahmed Adam Muazu, is sitting here and testifying to me. Whatever we achieved back then was a collective effort.”
The politician added: “We need peace, unity and collective support in this country if we have to move forward." Things can be right and good again in this country, and all we have to do is come together and do things collectively. ”
