2023 Labor Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi has said cases of mental illness are increasing in the country due to the worsening economic situation under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Mr. Obi stated this in a message on Thursday as Nigeria joined the international community to commemorate this year’s World Mental Health Day.
The former Anambra governor, through a post on his X handle, lamented that mental health remains one of the major health issues in Nigeria that is not given the attention it deserves.
He noted that the number of suicides in the country due to anxiety and depression continues to rise.
Mr Obi maintained that hunger, poverty and income inequality, coupled with other socio-political issues, were negatively impacting the population.
He disclosed that approximately 40 million to 60 million Nigerians currently suffer from various mental illnesses.
According to him, “Mental health remains one of the major health issues in Nigeria that does not receive enough attention.
“The deteriorating economic situation resulting from hunger, poverty and income inequality in the country, as well as other socio-political issues affecting the country, continues to increase the threat of mental illness.
“The National Institutes of Health reports that approximately 40 million to 60 million Nigerians suffer from various forms of mental illness.”
