Governor Lucky Ayedatiwa of Ondo State has clarified that his decision not to submit a certificate of return to the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, was not an act of disrespect.
Mr Ayedatiwa, who secured re-election in last Saturday’s gubernatorial poll, received his certificate of reinstatement on Wednesday at the National Headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja.
After the presentation, the governor led a delegation of Ondo APC leaders to meet with members of the APC National Working Committee (NWC) at the party secretariat where they were warmly received.
However, Mr. Ayedatiwa and his deputy, Mr. Adelami Olayde, did not comply with the normal procedure of submitting the certificate of return to the party’s national chairman.
Ayedatiwa, in an interview with Saturday Punch, stressed that the decision was not meant to disrespect Ganduje or the party leadership, but as a sign of respect for President Tinubu’s leadership.
He said, “I am supposed to first submit the certificate to the president, who is the leader of this party. But he is not in town. Therefore, it is not possible for me to submit the certificate to the chairman first. No. So it’s not rude.
“I believe it is the right thing to do first to submit it to the President before coming here. But I am in Abuja so I had to go. I recognize the leadership he has brought to this party at the state level. We have not lost an election since he became chairman of this party.”
