Nigerian Afrobeats star Yemi Alade recently opened up about receiving his first solo Grammy nomination.
Yemi Alade was nominated in the “Best African Music Performance” category for her song “Tomorrow” on the evening of November 8, when the nominations were announced.
About a month later, the talented singer, songwriter and choreographer heard news of her appearance with CNN’s Larry Madowo at African Voices’ 15th anniversary event in Lagos. I talked about how I felt that night.
Reflecting on the honor, Yemi called it a transformative moment. “It feels surreal. It feels like a miracle to me. Like a miracle happened in my life. I even thought that this moment would never come. I had to live. “These are good times,” she said.
The “Johnny” hitmaker further talked about how the recognition strengthened her belief in perseverance and hard work. “It made me feel seen because it gave me the reassurance that anyone can be anything. You just have to believe and never stop. Even if the world wants you to stop, don’t stop. Please,” she added.
The nominees in this category are uniquely Nigerian artists with great songs such as Asake’s MMS and Chris Brown’s Wizkid Sensational featuring Davido & Lojay, Burna Boy’s Higher and Tems’ Love Me JeJe.
The Grammy Awards will be held on February 2nd. Please take a look then.
