Umar Damagum, acting national chairman of the embattled Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has clarified that his meeting with the party’s state chairman has nothing to do with any conspiracy to maintain his position. did.
Speaking at the PDP Headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, Mr. Damagumu said the meeting was simply to get acquainted with each other, stressing that more than half of the chairs were new.
He said Wednesday’s meeting will be held on issues relating to the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, which has been postponed three times, as NEC matters are strictly within the authority of the National Working Committee and party chairman. He added that there was no relationship.
Damagum noted that Wednesday’s meeting was a normal interactive meeting, dismissing any insinuations to the contrary.
He said: “For the record, this meeting was for a dialogue with state chairs. As you can see from the introduction, more than half of the state chairs here are brand new; So that we can get to know ourselves and also discuss other things like upcoming regional conferences.
“We have nothing to do with anything that has been hinted at on social media about NEC or anything like that.
“You can read that. If I’m correct, I’ve never met any of your chairs since you were invited until I came to this hall. So, for the record, I would like to correct that. There is no such problem.
“NEC matters are entirely within the purview of the NWC and the Chairman. Therefore, we are not calling the Chairman here to insinuate anything.
“For the record, this is a regular interactive session to welcome the new chairs who have just joined us, get to know ourselves, and further discuss the ongoing zone meetings.
“As you know, the forms for the regional meeting are already in place.”
The Interim Chairman of the PDP Chairman’s Forum in Imo State, Mr. Austin Nwachukwu, also confirmed to newsmen at the venue that the meeting was merely to familiarize himself with the National Working Committee.
“Recall that a few months ago, we had a number of state legislatures, from districts to municipalities to provinces.
“The NWC has deemed it appropriate to bring us all together in Abuja so that we can get to know each other. It is essentially about the NWC and its terms still remaining and the NWC whose term expires next year. It’s about knowing well.
“We also discussed regional meetings. Forms have already been distributed, so those who want to participate in the contest can go to their ward offices and buy forms. “We appealed for unity,” he said.
