The National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Shehu Gabam, has questioned why the All Progressives Congress (APC) is concerned about the party’s meeting with former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.
According to a report by Naija News, Gabam said in an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today program on Thursday that the party did nothing wrong in its meeting with El-Rufai.
He said if El-Rufai and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Segun Sowunmi are indispensable, why is President Bola Tinubu’s administration not giving them proper roles to improve the efficiency of the government? I asked a question.
Mr. Gabam emphasized that the discussions at the previous meeting strategically considered the country’s situation in 2024.
The SDP chairman also said ministers in President Tinubu’s cabinet do not have the capacity to implement the president’s vision, adding that they have never experienced the economic difficulties Nigeria is currently facing.
He said, “Why is there dust about Mallam Nasir El-Rufai? They say he is not important, he is nothing. Why are they worried about El-Rufai? Why? Are we worried about Segun Sounmi? If they are important, why isn’t the government giving them the proper role they need to make the government more efficient?
“This meeting was for us as a party to take a strategic look at the state of the country in 2024. We are an opposition party with members elected from parliament, state assemblies and local governments. As a party, we have an obligation to look at the areas where things are not going well and expand the party’s platform to reach out to more people.
“This is the same thing that the APC did when the PDP was cheating. They reorganized, regrouped and restarted the merger that led to the defeat of the PDP.
“So, we have done nothing wrong. I don’t understand why Nasir El-Rufai and Segun Sowunmi, who happens to be my friend, are making such a fuss as if it was their first visit. We are weakening Nigeria. We have been in this fight not for the sake of a better Nigeria, but for a better Nigeria.
“No president who is elected to a four-year term and has problems within two years can survive. Jonathan’s campaign against him started within two years and he lost the election.”
