The National Youth Deputy Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Timothy Osadore, has supported former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s implementation of electoral reforms in the country.
Mr. Obasanjo on Sunday called for the removal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmoud Yakubu, while speaking at the Chinua Achebe Leadership Forum held at Yale University in New Haven, United States. I want you to remember. 2023 elections.
He called for shorter terms for election officials and a stricter vetting process to prevent partisan appointments.
Mr. Obasanjo criticized President Bola Tinubu’s performance during his term in office, arguing that corruption continues to rank as one of the most important issues affecting Nigerians.
In response, the presidency called Obasanjo’s claims hypocritical, adding that he was not an ideal leader while in power.
Mr. Osadore, however, while speaking to Mr. Punch, corroborated Mr. Obasanjo’s position.
He argued that the country’s electoral system needed to be overhauled.
Mr. Osadore maintained that Mr. Yakubu and other INEC officials should apologize to Nigerians for dashing their hopes at the polls.
He called on anti-corruption agencies to investigate commission officials for alleged mismanagement of resources.
Himu said Obasanjo’s comments reflected the demands of Nigerians.
He urged INEC bosses to take Obasanjo’s advice seriously.
He said: “In a more honorable society, the INEC Chairman would have humbly stepped down and apologized for having shattered the trust, hopes and expectations of Nigerians through his negligence and inexperience.” When he was appointed, Nigerians had high expectations and truly believed that he was a breath of fresh air.
“But now, witnessing his administration’s handling of events within INEC, Nigerians are not only disappointed, but have also returned to the dark days when elections were sold to the highest bidder and there was no credibility. It feels like it’s not free or fair.
“So President Obasanjo is not saying anything new. He understands that what INEC is doing now is a threat to our democracy and if we don’t deal with it, we will end up in anarchy.” I would advise the INEC chairman, if he has any honor left, to take this advice seriously.”
