World leaders condemn Israeli attack on UN peacekeepers Published at 07:12 BST07:12 BST
We are resuming live coverage this morning after Reuters reported that at least 20 people were killed in Jabalia, in the northern Gaza Strip.
World leaders also condemned the attack on UN peacekeeping forces by Israeli forces, following the second incident in 48 hours in southern Lebanon.
On Friday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced that it was responsible for an incident in which two Sri Lankan soldiers of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) were injured.
The IDF said soldiers operating near the base in Nakoula perceived a threat and opened fire, adding that the incident would be investigated “at the highest level.”
Meanwhile, UNIFIL announced on Thursday that its headquarters in Nakoula and nearby positions had been “repeatedly attacked” by Israeli forces. UNIFIL said two peacekeepers were injured in the attack, and on Wednesday IDF soldiers “deliberately fired on and disabled surveillance cameras around the position.”
France summoned the Israeli ambassador and joined Italy and Spain in issuing a statement calling the attacks “unjustified”.
US President Joe Biden has said he is urging Israel not to attack UNIFIL forces.
Russia said it was “outraged” and called on Israel to refrain from “hostile acts" against peacekeepers.
Earlier this week, Israeli forces expanded their ground incursion into southern Lebanon further west, telling residents of Nakoura and dozens of other towns and villages to evacuate.
Meanwhile, in Israel, the Israel Defense Forces announced that two drones from Lebanon had been detected externally, one intercepted and the other damaging a building in Herzliya, in the northern Tel Aviv district. The IDF said another drone entered Israel from outside Syria and landed in an open area in the Golan Heights.
The Lebanese Ministry of Health also announced on Friday that three people, including a two-year-old girl, were killed in an Israeli military raid on the city of Sidon in southern Lebanon.
