Chairman, Ambassador of Obio/Akpo Local Government Area of Rivers State. Chijoke Ifunwo has said FCT Minister Nyesom Wike is threatening Nigeria’s democracy.
Ifunwo made the claim while speaking on Arise TV’s Morning Show program on Tuesday.
He argued that no one can successfully destroy local government structures.
The chairman’s statement came against the backdrop of the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State following last Saturday’s local government elections.
Naija News reports that parts of the Eleme Local Government Secretariat were set on fire shortly after the arrival of the newly elected Speaker Brian Gokpa.
Commenting on the crisis, Ifunwo said: “We want to tell Nigerians that no one can destroy our local government, which has always existed even before the FCT Minister became chairman.
“So, it is ridiculous that they start sponsoring people to shoot all over the local government and Wike is threatening Nigeria’s democracy under President Bola Tinubu.
“I want to tell Nigerians that all residents of Rivers State are fine. We assure our employees that they will fulfill their obligations. Two people cannot be angry at the same time. What is happening in Rivers That’s more or less funny.
“We know that what happened will come again. Wike did the same to Rotimi Amaechi. Today, the people of Rivers State will also follow him because he refused to leave Rivers State alone. He wants to make Rivers State his private industry and line us with his pockets, but we said no.”
