National Public Relations Secretary of the Labor Party (LP), Obiora Ifor, insisted there was no division within the opposition party.
Naija News understands that Mr. Ifor made these remarks amid reports that two senators elected on the party’s platform are expected to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). I am doing it.
Recall that last week, Ajahn Iliya, who represents Jos South/Jos East Federal Constituency in Plateau State, announced his defection to the APC, making him the sixth Labor Party (LP) MP to defect from the party. Other defectors include Mr. Tochukwu Okere (Imo), Mr. Donatus Mathews (Kaduna), Mr. Bassey Akiba (Cross River), Mr. Iyawe Esosa (Ed), and Mr. Dawryop Fomu (Plateau). It will be done.
In an interview with the Nigerian Tribune, Ifor said the party is determined to reclaim its mandate through constitutional means from those who used its platform to secure seats in the National Assembly but have since jumped ship. said.
While Mr. Ifor confirmed that some senators were also defecting to the APC, he said the national leadership of the party was closely monitoring the developments and would resist it using the relevant provisions of the 1999 Constitution. Ta.
He said: “After the general election, Labor won eight seats in the House of Lords and 35 in the House of Commons, but we lost a Senate seat in court.
“We have also seen about six MPs leave the camp. This is despite the fact that it has clearly stated that the mission must be abandoned.
“The proviso to the constitution says that if there is a crisis in the party that MPs were elected to, they can change parties. But there is no crisis in the Labor Party so far.
“The current leadership has been recognized as legitimate and legitimate by the courts. Some of our leaders tried to incite a crisis, which was thwarted with the help of the courts.
“However, we challenged the defection in court and asked the defecting members to withdraw their mandates, vacate their seats, and return all illegally received allowances and compensation.
“As for whether some senators will leave the party, the party recognizes that there will be pressure from other parties trying to dissuade them. It is not impossible that one or two may fall.
“However, many of them have pledged loyalty to the party leadership and believe that common sense will prevail, especially now that the party has clearly recovered from its initial problems. However, there are those who wish to leave the camp. We will ensure that the provisions of the Constitution apply.”
