Defense Minister Bello Matawalle has criticized former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi over recent comments calling for protests against fuel and commodity price hikes.
In a recent interview, Amaechi, a former Minister of Transport, condemned the practice of Nigerian youths taking to the streets to protest against the rising cost of living and hardship in the country.
he said: “There should be protests, not against anyone, but against politicians, saying, ‘We won’t vote.’ ”
However, in a statement released on Saturday by the Ministry’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Hensho Ogbike, the minister described Amaechi’s comments as reckless and irresponsible.
The former Zamfara State governor said President Bola Tinubu is working tirelessly to ensure peace and security for all Nigerians.
It said: “It is reckless and irresponsible for a former civil servant in the same position as Mr. Amaechi to incite Nigerians against his own government.
“At a time when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is working tirelessly to address the challenges facing the nation through various reforms and is achieving results, the true situation of our people is being ignored for selfish political gain. It is absurd, ridiculous and shameful for anyone to take advantage of it.”
He warned that any attempt to destabilize the country through incitement will not be tolerated and warned Mr. Amaechi against accusing the government of its true intentions against Nigerians.
“We will not allow anyone to incite violence or manipulate the general situation of our people. Let this be our final warning to Amaechi and his allies.
“It is hoped that Mr. Amaechi will join hands with the Federal Government to move the country forward. Rather, he has chosen to continue to avoid short-sighted claims,” the statement added.
