Nollywood actor and politician, Kenneth Okonkwo has blamed the National Chairman of the Labor Party (LP), Julius Habre, for the violent defections that have gripped the party in recent days.
In a statement on his X account on Thursday, Okonkwo said the defection was evidence of a loss of confidence in Habre’s leadership.
He called on Habre to resign as the national chairman of the Labor Party so that the party can emerge as the main opposition party capable of defeating the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.
“The defection of elected members of @NgLabour clearly shows a loss of faith in Habre and the forces of @NgLabour’s incompetent, corrupt and disorganized leadership.
“I would like Mr. Habre to step down as the alleged leader of @NgLabour in order to enable new leadership to bring about the necessary reforms to place @NgLabour in the position of a viable main opposition party. We still have a chance to restore the tattered reputation we bequeathed to @NgLabour by wresting power from the ruling party @OfficialAPCNg,” Okonkwo submitted.
This warning comes as the Labor Party (LP) has suffered a serious setback after its gubernatorial candidate in the last Bayelsa state election, Udengus Eradiri, along with his running mate, retired Brigadier General Benjamin Natus, announced his resignation from the party. This comes on the heels of Naija News reporting that party.
According to reports, several local government chairmen of the Labor Party in Bayelsa have also followed suit and echoed the decision of Mr Eradiri and Mr Natus to leave the party.
In recent days, several MPs have also defected from the Labor Party to the APC.
