The Labor Party (LP) has strongly rejected claims by the Nigeria Labor Congress Political Committee (NLC-PC), which accused the Julius Habre leadership of prioritizing the interests of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement released on Friday, the National Public Relations Secretary of the LP, Obiola Ifor, clarified the party’s position, asserting that such allegations are baseless and misrepresent the party’s true objectives.
Mr Ifor said: “Following the recent landmark court judgment affirming Barrister Julius Abre’s leadership as National Chairman of the Labor Party, former Nollywood actor Kenneth Okonkwo and the Acting Chairman of the Nigeria Labor Congress, NLC, Some people, including Professor Theophilus Ndubuaku of the Political Commission, said that the Labor Party, under the leadership of barrister Julius Abre, is working for the APC and that is why the LP is winning in all court cases. I’m trying to push through that claim.”
An LP spokesperson said the narrative was misleading, mischievous and a calculated attempt to continue to distract and derail the party leadership in order to discredit it.
Mr Ifor said: “We must state clearly that the LP has been and remains more critical of the APC than the NLC. I recorded what happened.
“Today, workers in Nigeria are oppressed, the economy is not working, and injustices are being committed against workers, but no one except the current party leadership is oppressed in Nigeria. There is no one to speak for these workers.
“If there is one leader who has been very critical of the government since the beginning of his party, it is Labor’s leader Habré.
“For the first time, the party leadership under lawyer Julius Habre was able to record unprecedented results.
“Today, we are proud that Labor won a majority of votes in the 2023 presidential election and produced governors, eight senators, 35 representatives and several other Houses of Representatives across the country. .
“From the 2023 general election until now, Labor has been a very vibrant and strong opposition to the current government.
“If there is one opposition party that is very critical of this government, it is the Labor Party, led by barrister Julius Habre.
“To say that its leadership is working for the APC-led government is a mischief gone too far and can only be seen as a calculated attempt to divert the attention of the party’s leadership.
“If there is any organization working for the current government, we can safely assume that it is the Nigeria Labor Congress.”
