The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared it will oppose any attempt to install Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, as the next governor of Lagos State.
This comes after various groups recently endorsed Mr. Seyi as a candidate to succeed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in the 2027 elections.
Seyi may be welcomed to run for governorship in Osun and Imo states, where his family has roots, the Nigeria Youth Leadership Federation said in a statement released in Owerri, Imo State on Tuesday. suggested that there is.
Similarly, the socio-political group Friends of Say Tinubu endorsed him, praising his “visionary leadership, intelligence, empathy and strategic acumen.”
However, this support sparked a backlash.
In an interview with Punch, the spokesperson of the Lagos PDP, Hakeem Ahmaud, rejected the idea of Seyi Tinubu becoming governor, saying he could not accept it.
“Lagos will not serve him. The governorship is not a gift,” Ahmaud said. “If the Tinubu camp thinks it can replicate the tactics used in places like Ondo and Edo states, it will meet stiff resistance.”
Mr. Ahmaud further noted that many Lagosians did not support Mr. Tinubu in the last presidential election, saying this is a clear indication that they will not support his son for governorship.
However, the spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Seyi Oladejo, dismissed the discussion as premature.
“It is too early to discuss the 2027 elections,” he said, urging people to focus on supporting the current government.
“We should rally behind the governor and the president now to move development forward,” he said.
Earlier, prominent APC Chief Joe Igbokwe also expressed his opinion on the issue on his Facebook page.
“Who are the faceless people who are pushing Seyi Tinubu to be governor of Lagos? This is an unnecessary distraction. The real goal is to oust President Bola Tinubu. Governing Lagos is an amateur job Not,” he wrote.
