The Vice Chancellor of the Ondo State University of Medicine, Professor Adesegun Fatusi, has urged Nigerian youths to play an active role in the development of the country through transformative initiatives.
He said the future of the country rests with the youth and emphasized their important responsibility in shaping the country’s progress.
Speaking at the launch of the Nigeria National Youth Index (NNYI) in Port Harcourt, organized by Strengthening Programs for Youth and Youth through Resource and Knowledge Generation and Linking to Evidence (SPARKLE), Professor Fatusi said: said. They are not only beneficiaries of development, but also active participants in shaping the future. Therefore, it is imperative that we provide them with the tools, opportunities, and support systems they need to succeed in an increasingly complex world. ”
In a statement by Isaac Oluyi, the University’s Head of Communications, Professor Fatusi reiterated the importance of empowering youth, adding that NNYI’s insights will help stakeholders identify gaps and It will help leverage strengths to ensure national growth, he stressed. He added: “Insights from the Nigeria National Youth Index will help stakeholders identify gaps, leverage strengths and ensure that youth are not left behind in the nation’s pursuit of growth and prosperity. ” he added.
NNYI, a SPARKLE initiative funded by the Ford Foundation, is a practical and policy-driven approach to measuring and monitoring various aspects of youth development in Nigeria using existing secondary data.
The project coordinator, Dr. Olorunfemi Ogundele, emphasized that the NNYI is the result of collaborative efforts among stakeholders in youth development, including academic institutions and researchers. He noted that the index provides analysis of key areas such as education, employment, health and social inclusion, as outlined in Nigeria’s National Youth Policy. Mr Ogundele said: “By providing an overview of the situation of youth in Nigeria, this report paves the way for regular and objective monitoring of youth development in Nigeria, making it more targeted and scientifically based. We aim to serve as a basis for advocating advocacy efforts based on “effective youth development interventions.” ”
The event also saw the unveiling of the logo for the 4th Nigeria Conference on Youth Health and Development, organized by the Youth Health Association of Nigeria (SAYPHIN). The conference, titled ‘Garden City 2025’, will be held in Port Harcourt in August 2025.
