Senate President Godswill Akpabio has declared that Nigeria will only have a three-tier government if the anomalies in local government elections are corrected.
Constitutionally, the country operates through three tiers of government: the federal government, state governments, and local governments.
However, in Nigeria, the local government system appears to be dysfunctional as the third tier of government is under the control of governors who control its allocation. Until that is fixed, the country only has two tiers of government, Akpabio said.
Speaking on the floor of the Senate on Thursday, Akpabio said: Only if we can correct the electoral situation in local governments across the country will three-tier politics become possible. ”
Some states have already held elections at the local government level, with Rivers State being the latest to do so.
DAILY POST reports that the local government elections in Rivers State have been marred by violence following a supremacy battle between the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Mr. Nyesom Wike and the state governor, Mr. Siminarayi Hubala.
