Players of the Libyan national football team took part in a training session on Monday in preparation for the match against the Super Eagles.
background
The Super Eagles plane landed at Al Abak Airport on Sunday for the second AFCON qualifying match against Libya. The game was scheduled for Tuesday at the Martyrs of February Stadium in Benina, Benghazi.
However, the Super Eagles players and coaches were held at Al Abak Airport for more than 20 hours without food or drink.
On Monday morning, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announced the Super Eagles’ withdrawal from the qualifying matches and asked them to return home. The Nigerian team then arrived in Kano from Libya.
In response to the situation, the Libyan Football Federation (LFF) stated that the flight diversion experienced by the Nigerian national team was not “intentional”.
LFF rejected claims of “misconduct or sabotage” and claimed their team faced a similar situation in Nigeria.
In response, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) also announced that it was investigating the “alarming” incident.
