Israeli experts told CNN that the United States’ push for Israel to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza reveals tensions between the two governments and growing discontent in Washington.
Yaakov Katz, senior columnist for The Jerusalem Post, told CNN’s Linda Kincaid that continued Israeli Defense Force operations in the northern part of the enclave complicate efforts to deliver humanitarian aid.
“The Biden administration wants to end this war. They want the war in Gaza to end, they want the war to end in Lebanon. “We don't want Israel to attack Iran in retaliation,” Katz said.
Earlier, CNN reported that the Biden administration sent a letter to Israel demanding that it act to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza within the next 30 days or risk violating US law governing foreign military aid. reported that US military aid may be in jeopardy.
According to CNN analyst Barak Ravid and Reuters, the Israeli government is reviewing the letter.
“This is just part of a growing frustration as America approaches the general election in a few weeks. They want to forget this war,” Katz said.
Katz said Israel still recognizes war as “existing.” He said the conflict appeared to be progressing “pretty well” for Israel compared to the days after the Oct. 7 Hamas attack a year ago, which took Israel by surprise.
Regarding Hezbollah, Katz said Israel decided last month to change the equation, as evidenced by pager and walkie-talkie attacks, the killing of the Iranian-backed group’s top leadership, and a decline in long-range missile capabilities.
