The All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed concern over the wave of defections to its platform and warned of the potential impact on Nigeria’s democratic structure.
APC National Organizing Deputy General Secretary Nze Dulu spoke with Punch on Friday, warning that a weak opposition could undermine democracy and urging party leadership to refrain from encouraging defections from the opposition. did.
Mr. Durr emphasized the importance of maintaining an active opposition to ensure checks and balances in governance.
The alarm comes in the wake of mass defections of Labor Party (LP) MPs to the ruling APC, a trend that has drawn mixed reactions from political analysts and the public.
Regarding defections, Durr said, “We have to strengthen the political space so that people are not encouraged to defect from one party to another.” People should be encouraged to stay in their political environment and develop the party’s ideology, rather than abandoning it just because there are problems within the party.
“That is the only way to run a political party in Nigeria. I am not one to encourage defection. The opposition must be allowed to blossom and flourish. You can have that agenda.
“Opposition represents a tendency that must not only be encouraged, but cultivated and nurtured in the interest of our country. If you decide that is the case, you should submit your resignation and request a vote based on a different political party.”
