The Rivers State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Mr. Martin Amaefure, has adopted a resolution advocating the cancellation of the planned local government elections in the state, citing the judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
According to Naija News, the House of Assembly resolved to promptly convey this decision to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) through a strongly worded letter.
The action follows a protest march organized by members of the Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday, which took place at both the State Department offices and the official residence in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital. .
During the protest at the DSS office, PDP representative Aaron Chukwuemeka clarified that the main objective was to protest the local government elections scheduled for October 5.
On the contrary, the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Mr. Victor Oko-Jumbo, has called for the local government elections scheduled for Saturday to proceed in accordance with existing court decisions upholding the rule of law and the electoral process.
In Thursday’s plenary session, Speaker of the House of Assembly Victor Oko-Jumbo said this position was in line with that of the Executive Branch of Government and Governor Siminarayi Hubala, calling for properly elected political leaders at the local government level. He emphasized the importance of establishing a state.
Local government elections are scheduled for October 5, 2024.
