The Chief Medical Director of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), Professor Abdullahi Yusuf, on Monday said that men can also get breast cancer.

Therefore, he encouraged both men and women to undergo breast cancer screening.

Yusuf disclosed this in an interview with newsmen on the sidelines of the Breast Cancer Awareness Walk organized as part of activities to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Ilorin, Kwara State.

The program themed “No one should face breast cancer alone” was organized by UITH in collaboration with the Women Medical Association of Nigeria (MWAN).

Speaking through Professor Bilyaminu Abayomi, Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC), Yusuf explained that breast cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form within the breast tissue.

She believes that certain factors increase the risk of breast cancer, including increasing age and obesity, harmful use of alcohol, family history of breast cancer, history of radiation exposure, reproductive history (such as age at onset of menstruation and age at first pregnancy), and smoking. He said he would increase it. Use of postmenopausal hormone therapy.

The CMD described the program as relevant, noting that it helped raise awareness of the stigma against people with the disease and encourage behavior change.

She further explained that the awareness campaign also facilitated knowledge sharing, provided a platform to disseminate breast cancer information, and helped raise people’s awareness about the need for screening and life-saving early diagnosis.
