Monday Briefing: US to send troops to Israel

US sends about 100 troops to Israel for missile defenseThe Pentagon announced that it is sending an advanced missile defense system to Israel and about 100 U.S. military personnel to operate it. This will be the first U.S. military deployment to Israel since the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

The move would put the U.S. military into operation of a ground-based interceptor system designed to defend against ballistic missiles, moving it closer to an escalating Middle East war. This comes as Israel plans to retaliate after Iran launched around 200 missiles, including ballistic missiles, at Israel on October 1.

When asked about this on Sunday, President Biden said only that he had ordered the Pentagon to deploy the system “to protect Israel.”

Harris struggles to win support among Latinos, new poll findsVice President Kamala Harris’ approval rating among Hispanic voters is in dangerously low territory for Democrats, according to a New York Times/Siena College poll. But Donald Trump remains strong within the group, even after ending his campaign with a sharp anti-immigrant message.

The findings highlight the important role this group plays in determining control of the White House. The survey also suggests that voters’ choices could still change, with about a quarter of respondents saying they were undecided or able to be persuaded, slightly less than voters overall. It was expensive. Undecided voters are leaning toward Harris.

Read more: Polls of likely Hispanic voters conducted this fall show significant signs of support for President Trump’s most aggressive immigration policies. More than a third of Hispanic voters say they support both building a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border and deporting immigrants who are in the U.S. illegally.

INTERVIEW: In Nevada, a key battleground state, Latinos say they are losing trust in government.

Analysis: Nate Cohn analyzes five possible explanations for Trump’s growing support among black and Hispanic voters, especially young men.

Ladakh’s local hero demands India to take care of his people

India’s remote Ladakh region, located in the Himalayas between China and Pakistan, is critical to national security. But since the Indian government decided to bring the region under direct federal control, residents have had less autonomy and are concerned about the impact of development on the fragile ecosystem.

Sonam Wangchuk, an activist from Ladakh, is leading protests demanding that the country be more considerate of its people. Last month, Wangchuk and his supporters traveled to New Delhi to demand that the government agree to resume talks on how the land should be governed. Mr Wangchuck has been on a planned 28-day fast for more than a week, but says he intends to end it if the government agrees to negotiate.

Twenty years ago this month, Daniel Jones began editing the Times’ “Modern Love” column. After reading nearly 200,000 stories, some baffling, some shocking, and some inspiring, he recalls seven lessons that helped him love more.

Life survived: Alex Salmond, the former Scottish first minister who led the country through an independence referendum and campaigned to leave the UK, died on Saturday. He was 69 years old.

Can the government force people to have more babies?

Starting in the 1990s, Japan began rolling out policies aimed at encouraging people to have more babies. Examples include extended parental leave, childcare center subsidies, and direct cash transfers.

But none worked. The number of babies born in Japan last year fell to an all-time low. Governments in Europe, East Asia, and North America are joining Japan, but modern families don’t seem to want to get bigger. So what actually induces people to have more children? And if it really doesn’t work, why doesn’t it work? Click here for details.
