Liz Cheney campaigns with Harris in Wisconsin, Trump holds rally in Michigan
Ripon, Wis.: Vice President Kamala Harris on Thursday rallied alongside Republican Liz Cheney in the birthplace of the modern Republican Party to double-cross Republican candidate Donald Trump as a threat to democracy.
As people held signs proclaiming “country before party,” Harris rejected Trump for refusing to accept the 2020 election results and failing to quell Yang’s insurrection. To do so, “people of all political parties must come together,” he told the crowd. June 2021.
It was an unlikely moment — a Democratic candidate nodding to a member of his rival’s background in the final stages of a presidential campaign — and showed how Harris is trying to win over moderate voters. .
“As you have all heard and known, he refused to accept the will of the people and refused to accept the results of a free and fair election,” Harris said of Trump.
“The president of the United States should not view our country through the narrow lens of ideology, partisanship, or self-interest.”
Cheney is one of Trump’s most ardent opponents. As the daughter of former Republican Vice President Dick Cheney and the top Republican on the House committee investigating the January 6, 2021 riot, she earned the scorn of President Trump and was effectively expelled from the party.
“Violence does not and should never determine who rules us. Voters do,” Cheney said while watching the violent attack on television. He told the audience that President Trump had refused to act. Someone in the crowd yelled, “Coward!” Others booed.
“He praised the rioters. He didn’t condemn them. That’s Donald Trump,” Cheney said.
She lost her Wyoming seat to a pro-Trump candidate two years ago and endorsed Democratic candidate Harris last month. The two women appeared together in Ripon. Ripon was home to a white schoolhouse, and a series of rallies held in 1854 to oppose the expansion of slavery led to the founding of the Republican Party.
“I know she loves our country, and I know she will be a president for all Americans,” Cheney said of Harris. Noting that she remains a conservative, Cheney said she was “honored to join this urgent cause.”
Instead of the usual “Harris Waltz” campaign sign, the stage was decorated with a large sign that read “Party Over Country” and lots of red, white and blue bunting.
Ms. Harris has begun a two-day visit to Wisconsin and Michigan, and Mr. Trump will visit Michigan on Thursday, with both candidates aiming to win in the “blue wall” battleground state, which also includes Pennsylvania. We fought.
Meanwhile, President Joe Biden said Thursday that he wasn’t concerned about the race between Trump and Harris ending up being decided because “it’s always this close.”
“She’s going to do great,” Biden told reporters on the South Lawn of the White House on his way to visit storm-ravaged states of Georgia and Florida. He said Harris’ running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, performed well in a debate with Republican vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance at a debate in New York on Tuesday. added.
“The other one lost in the debate,” Biden said. “He misrepresented everything.”
Harris’ visit to Wisconsin comes a day after a federal judge unsealed a 165-page court filing outlining the prosecutor’s case against Trump seeking to overturn his 2020 election loss. President Trump has pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy and obstruction.
Trump did not mention the documents filed by special counsel Jack Smith or Cheney’s appearance with Harris during an 82-minute speech at a rally in Saginaw County, Michigan. In 2020, Democrat Biden won the lead counties by just 303 votes, contributing to his victory in the state.
During President Trump’s speech, his campaign announced that he would appear in Georgia with Republican Gov. Brian Kemp on Friday. The two men reconciled after President Trump launched a blistering attack on Kemp in August, accusing him of not giving in to efforts to reverse his 2020 loss.
During the 2020 campaign, Liz Cheney criticized Harris as a “radical liberal” who “wants to remake America in the image of what’s happening on the streets of Portland and Seattle.” George Floyd.
But January 6th marked a turning point for Liz Cheney and her family. Both Cheney and Harris support Harris, who is part of a cadre of current and former Republican officials who have broken with the majority of the party that is aligned with Trump. Harris hopes to portray her candidacy as a patriotic choice for independent and conservative voters upset by Trump’s unwillingness to cede power. President Trump continues to deny his defeat with false claims of voter fraud.
On Thursday, Harris was also endorsed by Cassidy Hutchinson, a former junior White House aide during the Trump era, who spoke during Cheney’s Jan. 6 congressional committee hearing. He spoke of how disgusted he was with the failure to stop the riots. Harris’ campaign also began airing ads targeting Republicans, independents and former Trump voters in battleground states.
Cheney’s presence caused some dissonance among Harris supporters in the audience, especially those who remember her father’s role as a Republican headliner.
Victor Romero, 46, said it was “a little weird” to be at the event with his girlfriend.
“I still don’t like Liz Cheney’s politics, but I’m glad she understands that the Republican Party as it exists now is only for Trump.”
But to younger voters, Cheney is primarily known as the person who stands up to Trump.
“She stuck to her morals,” said Kinaeda Gray, 22.
Harris will hold a campaign rally in Flint, Michigan, on Friday, continuing her tour of states critical to Democratic victories. Trump won Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan in 2016, and Biden won in 2020.
President Trump has increased his focus on Michigan, holding two rallies in the state in less than a week before Thursday’s appearance in Saginaw.
