SOS Children’s Villages, a non-governmental organization focused on supporting unaccompanied children and at-risk families, supports more than 17.5 million orphaned children in Nigeria with little or no support. He blamed them for living without receiving such treatment.
The concerns were raised by Thelma Ogelabi, the organization’s fund development manager, in a statement released by the organization’s head of brand communications, Rhoda Ocheche, on Thursday to commemorate World Development Information Day.
WDI Day is commemorated on October 24 every year to highlight and raise awareness of the importance of development issues and sustainable progress.
In May 2023, the Lagos State Government partnered with the organization on the provision of transit care to ensure appropriate care for vulnerable children in the state.
Nigeria is calling for urgent collective action to protect children from dire conditions and promote sustainable development for a brighter future.
The organization stressed that addressing Nigeria’s challenges, especially those affecting children, requires a unified approach with strong and effective partnerships.
Ogelabi said: “More than 153 million children are orphans, 17.5 million of whom live in vulnerable situations with little or no support in Nigeria.Nigeria’s most vulnerable children. are subject to all forms of child abuse due to their poor conditions and are in urgent need of attention.
“It is our shared responsibility to reduce the risks that leave children vulnerable and to work towards sustainable development for their future. This shows that even children can suddenly find themselves in a vulnerable position and be exposed to harsh realities.
“This proves that a single incident can lead to untold nightmares for children, from loss of livelihood, to being out of school, exposure to violence, and poor health and nutrition. Unfortunately, many children face these problems due to some circumstances.
According to her, SOS Children’s Villages in Nigeria embraces meaningful collaborations and partnerships that can nurture and transform the lives of children in the country.
