Nigeria and 12 other countries join the BRICS intergovernmental organization as partners rather than full members.
The announcement was made during the ongoing BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, where BRICS aims to strengthen cooperation with emerging economies around the world.

The other 12 countries are: Algeria, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, Uzbekistan, Vietnam
Four countries will join in January 2024: Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates.
BRICS is an acronym for a group of major emerging market economies – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – aimed at promoting trade, investment, peace, security, development and cooperation.
The founding nations of Brazil, Russia, India and China held their first summit in Russia in 2009 under the name BRICs.
After the organization was renamed, South Africa joined the group in 2010 before attending its first summit as a member in 2011.
Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates will be the first member states to attend the 2024 summit in Russia.
