Nigeria has signed a memorandum of understanding with Swedish telecommunications giant Ericsson to establish a 5G innovation lab to advance the country’s digital infrastructure.
The announcement was made on Friday by Vice President Kassim Shettima’s spokesperson Stanley Nkwocha during the vice president’s working visit to Sweden.
“Breaking News: Nigeria and Ericsson sign Memorandum of Understanding on 5G Innovation Lab,” Nkwocha wrote on his official X handle, without providing further details.
Prior to this, Nkwocha revealed that Shettima had met with Ericsson executives, saying, “The vice president was Ericsson’s senior vice president and head of Middle East and Africa, Patrick Johansson, and Ericsson’s head of Nigeria, Patrick Johansson. I was received by Mr. Peter Olusoji Ogundele.” ”
He said the discussion focused on strengthening Nigeria’s telecommunications sector, implementing 5G and developing digital infrastructure.
“Other topics include the digital economy, digital education, global communications outsourcing, future technology evolution, and more,” the tweet said.
Mr Nkwocha added that Mr Shettima’s engagement with the telecoms giant followed an earlier visit to Scania, the world’s leading manufacturer of heavy vehicles and engines, in Södertalje.
The talks reportedly focused on exploring biofuel technology and other green transportation solutions that could be adopted in Nigeria.
On Wednesday, the Vice President left Abuja for Sweden for a two-day visit to represent Nigeria in bilateral negotiations with the Scandinavian nation.
Nkwocha said that during the working visit, Shettima would engage in high-level meetings with key government officials, including meetings with Sweden’s Crown Princess Victoria and the Swedish Prime Minister.
