In Nigeria, six new MPOX cases were confirmed across the federation in the 39th week from September 22 to 29, but no deaths were recorded.
This was disclosed by the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) in a status report on Monday.
According to the NCDC, the states affected in the reporting week were Plateau State with two cases, Delta State, FCT, Katsina State and Imo State with one case each.
The number of recorded infections marks an increase from three cases recorded the previous week, with authorities saying 25 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have reported at least one case in 57 local government areas since the start of the outbreak. The outbreak killed 17 people and infected mostly men (70%), the report said.
Geographically, the disease has spread widely across the country, affecting all 36 states, indicating a widespread distribution of the FCT.
Response activities
NCDC said it is actively coordinating the response to the mpox outbreak through the National Mpox multi-sector and multi-partner Emergency Operations Center (EOC).
This collaboration will involve a variety of stakeholders to ensure a comprehensive approach.
The report states that this response will include monitoring and reporting suspected and confirmed cases nationwide, providing guidance and support for case management, conducting public awareness campaigns, and collaborating with state governments, health agencies, and partners. It added that it would be included.
He advised the public to call the NCDC toll-free number if they suspect they have been infected, adding that by leveraging its expertise and resources, it aims to reduce the spread of MPOX and protect the health of Nigerians.
