Nigeria has joined BRICS as a partner country along with 12 other countries, further strengthening economic ties with the intergovernmental bloc.
The announcement was made at the BRICS Summit held in Kazan, Russia from October 22 to 24, 2024.
The 12 additional partner countries are Algeria, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.

A post from the member country on X (formerly Twitter) read, “BRICS will officially add 13 new countries to the alliance as partner countries (not formal members).”
The bloc previously granted formal membership to Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates in January 2024.
These four countries will be attending the BRICS summit to be held in Russia in 2024 for the first time as official members.
BRICS was founded by Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC) in 2009, but welcomed South Africa as a member in 2010 and rebranded the alliance as BRICS.
The organization’s core mission is to promote trade, investment, development, security, and cooperation among major emerging market economies.
