Nigeria is calling on UN member states to end "unnecessary" and protracted conflicts that cause civilian casualties and intolerable suffering around the world.
Nasir Kwara, Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), made this appeal at the 79th Session of the Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly held in New York.
Mr. Kwara stressed the need for collective action among Member States to ensure peace, unity and security around the world.
He condemned the humanitarian catastrophe and continued loss of life of civilians, especially defenseless women and children, caught up in wars around the world.
The Chair also advocated strengthening cooperation among Member States, United Nations agencies and partners to tackle multiple global crises and eradicate poverty.
“Nigeria calls on member states and the wider international community to end unnecessary and protracted conflicts that result in civilian casualties and intolerable suffering, and collectively ensure world peace, unity and security,” Kwara said. said.
He pointed out that the world faces multidimensional challenges that cannot be solved by any one country alone.
“The theme of this year’s General Assembly, ‘Unity and diversity to promote peace, sustainable development and human dignity for all people everywhere,’ is a reflection of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Agenda 2030. ”, Kwara said.
On climate change, Mr. Kwara said the world faces many crises, including humanitarian, economic, social, food and climate-related challenges, posing a major obstacle to social development policies.
He stressed the need for Member States to work together to implement effective policies to ensure self-sufficiency and protection from poverty for their peoples.
Mr. Kwara noted that many developing countries were on the brink of starvation and called on the United Nations and its agencies to continue advocating for inclusive, equitable and sustainable development.
On Nigeria’s progress, Kwara emphasized the Federal Government’s commitment to leaving no one behind by prioritizing the inclusion of vulnerable groups in all development programs and frameworks.
“This will be achieved by building a strong and globally competitive economy,” Kwara added.
