The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has acquired a Cessna Grand Caravan EX-208B aircraft as part of its efforts to strengthen its air patrol and surveillance operations.
The Comptroller and Comptroller (CG) of the NCS, Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, disclosed this in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Mr. Abdullahi Maiwada, in Abuja on Sunday.
Adeniyi said the move was a game-changer for the service in its efforts to effectively carry out its constitutional mandate to combat smuggling.
He said the aircraft is registered as 5N-BAA and is equipped with the latest Garmin G 1000 avionics cockpit system, which allows it to operate day or night and even in poor visibility conditions.
“This aircraft will be a game changer for the NCS Air Wing.
“The ability to transport 10 officers, coupled with six hours of airborne endurance, will significantly enhance our aerial surveillance and border security capabilities,” he said.
He said the aircraft would play an important role in air patrols to detect smuggling routes, deploy armed personnel and provide rapid support to ground operations.
He said the aircraft’s various features make it suitable for Nigeria’s border security operations.
The NCS chief said the aircraft is powered by the highly reliable PT6 Pratt & Whitney engine.
He said it is recognized worldwide for its rugged versatility, short takeoff and landing capabilities, and ability to operate from remote airstrips.
“With this aircraft, we will be able to strengthen our air border security capabilities and not only deter illegal activities, but also provide rapid evacuation support if needed,” he said.
According to him, the aircraft will serve as a strategic asset for the Nigeria Customs Technical and Hunger Services Company, providing logistical support and revenue generation to the service.
He said the aircraft is cost-effective as its operating costs are relatively low compared to other aircraft in its class.
“This is a long-term investment in the service that will not only improve operational efficiency but also contribute to the sustainability of the air surveillance program,” he said.
He added that the acquisition of this aircraft is expected to bring significant tactical advantages to the NCS.
He said this was due to increased border security, which would send a clear signal to economic saboteurs that the service was better equipped to fight smuggling activities. . (NAN)
