Zamfara: Bandit Hotspot
What began as a conflict between armed herdsmen, mainly Fulani, and Hausa vigilantes, Yansakai, has now turned into full-scale violence ranging from cattle rustling and kidnapping for ransom to serious injuries and killings of locals. Ta.
The first bandit group, Kungiar Gayu, emerged in 2011 (in Zamfara) and focused on cattle rustling and robbery. Unfortunately, efforts to suppress this group by the outlawed Hausa Yansakai group have worsened the situation, resulting in the formation of more armed bandit groups, mainly dominated by Fulani people.

The trend has spread beyond Zamfara to other states in northern Nigeria, making it difficult for the police alone to deal with it. Nigeria’s military, consisting of police, military and local vigilante groups, continues to battle the bandits, resulting in casualties on both sides. But the scourge continues as terrorists take control of ungoverned territory and apply their own rules.
In a recent video, one of the terror masterminds, Bello Turzi, traced the origins of the bandits to the partial application of Sharia law to subjugate the Fulani people of Zamfara.
He said the Yansakai militia further worsened the situation and further fueled Fulani discontent.
