Nigeria’s U20 team, the Flying Eagles, produced another thrilling comeback on Sunday at the Stade du Caigues in Lomé, defeating the Republic of Nigeria 3-1.
This victory earned them a place in the finals of the WAFU B U20 Championship and a ticket to the 2025 Africa U20 Nations Cup.
The victory was also an important step in the Flying Eagles’ defense of the title they won in Niamey two years ago.
Aliyu Zubair’s side will face Ghana in Wednesday’s final.

The Flying Eagles’ determination was clear as they took the field.
Niger Republic took the lead in the ninth minute, but the seven-time African champions remained unfazed.
They dominated the match and scored an impressive three goals. An impressive exchange of passes between Kupalovo Alierhi, Abba Maigali and Nasir Salih saw Clinton Jehuta equalize in the 35th minute with a superb shot from outside the box.

Jephtha scored again 13 minutes into the second half, giving Nigeria the lead.
Goalkeeper Ifeanyi Harcourt made some good saves to maintain Nigeria’s advantage. Olalekan Alonge sealed the victory with his third goal in stoppage time.
Nigeria Football Federation President Ibrahim Musa Gusau praised the team’s fighting spirit. “We believe they have what it takes to fight until the end and defend their title against Ghana.”

Heading into their semi-final matchup, the Flying Eagles received a huge morale boost from well-meaning Nigerians.
Vice President of the Senate Balau Jibrin donated 2 million naira while Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi, a Flying Eagles alumnus, blessed him with 5 million naira.

Other notable donors include Mr. Frank Peters, Chairman of Crystal Sapphire Limited (who has pledged an additional N1.5 million if we win Niger Republic), Mr. Victor Apugo (who has pledged N1 million and another N2 million); ), including attorney Kenneth, chairman of Mabron FC. Agadugba (2 million naira, promised 12 million naira if he makes it to the finals).
Additionally, a senior NFF official and an anonymous donor donated N1 million and N1.5 million respectively.
The Flying Eagles will take on Ghana in Wednesday’s final as they aim to defend their title and make Nigeria proud.
