Former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, said he was against the executive system of government.
He asserted that the time has come for Nigeria to abolish the presidential system and return to a parliamentary system of government.
According to him, it is impossible for one individual to govern 120 million people without checks and balances.
Mr. Aregbesola said this at the National Dialogue on the National Parliamentary System in Abuja on Monday.
He maintained that a parliamentary arrangement was most suitable for a country like Nigeria.
He said, “If you continue to believe that any individual, no matter how beautiful or how good, is capable of governing 120 million people by himself without a check, you are kidding yourself. So just think about that. However, I am against the government’s enforcement system.
“I believe that collective arrangements guaranteed by a parliamentary system of government are best for a country like Nigeria if we are serious about advancing the interests of the majority of our people.”
Naija News recalls that earlier this year, a group of members of the House of Representatives introduced a bill seeking to amend the 1999 Constitution with the aim of moving from the current presidential system to a parliamentary system of government.
The group, made up of about 60 MPs, argued the transition was necessary to reduce governance costs in the face of declining revenues.
