TULSA, Okla. — Dozens of people gathered at Oral Roberts University (ORU) on Wednesday to raise money to build more schools in the African nation of Ghana.
The Paula Marshall Foundation, a nonprofit that builds schools for children in Africa, hosted the first Tulsa Executive Excellence Luncheon.
The Paula Marshall Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded by Bama Companies and CEO Paula Marshall, a third-generation Tulsan. The piece was created after Marshall visited Ghana, Africa, and fell in love with the children, the release said.
“The only life they knew was poverty and slavery with no way out,” the statement said. “Paula knew the way to give these children a better life was to provide them with opportunities through education.”
According to the announcement, the POLA Foundation has educated more than 1,000 students in Africa, giving them opportunities they never had before.
The schools built by this nonprofit organization range from elementary education to vocational training, teaching students lifelong careers.
“My mission is to provide every child in Ghana with an education and a new chance at life,” Marshall said.
The purpose of Wednesday’s luncheon, held at ORU’s Global Learning Center, was to celebrate accomplishments and leadership and educate attendees about the need for schools in Africa.
A bishop flew from Ghana to Tulsa to honor his work in the community.
The foundation says that since it built schools in Ghana, it has seen many people use their new education to get their first real job, buy a house or a car.
They are working on school number 7.
