The 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prince Adewole Adebayo, has blamed President Bola Tinubu for not prioritizing governance for the hardships Nigerians are currently facing.
Adebayo criticized the president’s leadership style, particularly his reluctance to engage with and widely consult Nigerians before implementing major policy decisions.
He argued that this approach contributes to the appointment of ministers who bring little or no value to the government.
Mr Adebayo said: “Many ministers only know the route to the office. It is difficult for them to work on their duties. Attending weekly executive council meetings where they are required to respond to the media. Separately, if you follow the decisions of the Federal Executive Council, you will find that most of them are just approvals, not policies. They are like a bidding committee. You will receive the contract there.”
He harshly stated that the government has failed to secure the lives and property of Nigerians, making life difficult for the people.
Claiming that there is currently no governance in Nigeria, he said: “If lives and property are safe, governance is happening even if the president does not speak. Civil servants are delivering services and achieving goals. If people have better electricity and health care. If the rule of law is working through the judiciary. So by industry, I mean both professional fields, such as lawyers and nurses, and productive industries, such as manufacturing, agriculture, and extractive industries. If they work, do people like your face? Regardless, the evidence is clear: governance is in place. But these things don’t exist at this point.”
Regarding recent comments by former President Olusegun Obasanjo about the current government, Adebayo said that although Obasanjo did not get everything right during his time, he was not afraid to bring talented Nigerians into the government. He pointed out.
“The difference is that Obasanjo had efficiency, but he also knew how to govern even when policies were bad. Obasanjo had the time to consult and the ability to explain. He was not afraid to bring talent into the government.
“That doesn’t mean I agree with all of his policies. After all, had he been successful, many of the problems that subsequent administrations faced wouldn’t exist. But that doesn’t mean I agree with all of his policies. That doesn’t disqualify you from pointing it out. Plus, he’s been to that office several times. Even if you think he’s doing the same thing he used to, that’s no excuse.” he agreed.
