The African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate in the just-concluded Ondo State governorship election, Myson Nnejo, has criticized the conduct of the poll, alleging widespread vote buying and selling.
In a phone interview with Punch on Sunday, Nejo said he lost the election because he refused to engage in vote-buying.
The election results announced by the State Returning Officer, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi at the State Collation Center in Akure, show that the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, secured a decisive victory with 366,781 votes. Ta.
Mr. Ayedatiwa defeated his closest rival, Agboola Ajayi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who polled 117,845 votes, and Mr. Neho, who finished far behind.
Governor Ayedatiwa won all 18 local governments in the state and was later declared for re-election by INEC.
He said, “What is the reaction of the people? I thank the good people of Ondo State who voted for me without giving me any money. But they still voted for me. My side. There was no vote-buying or unethical behavior, so I want to believe that my vote counted. For now, I want to believe that I am the winner of this election.”
On the issue of vote buying during the elections, Mr Nejo specifically admitted that votes were bought for amounts as high as N20,000, calling the development worrying.
Nejo added: “People were buying votes for N20,000 or N15,000, but in my voting department it was N10,000 to N15,000.
“I didn’t have any money, and I said I wouldn’t give away my Kobo to buy votes, so I ended up only having two votes in the unit, for a total of about 40 votes, but I don’t care. People told me They called me and asked for money in exchange for my vote, but I stood my ground. If you want to vote, you should vote. I wasn’t going to give you a Kobo to buy votes.”
