Nigerian reggae and dancehall singer Patrick Ngaemeka Okorie, known professionally as Patoranking, has expressed disappointment with Burna Boy who claimed that Afrobeats has no substance.
Patoranking took up the issue of Grammy Award winner Burna Boy’s recent statement labeling Afrobeats as a genre without substance.
In a recent interview, Patoranking disagreed with Burna Boy’s statements regarding Afrobeats analysis and claimed that it is wrong to dismiss the genre in such a manner.
he said:
“Despite being an ambassador of culture, I don’t think that’s what he (Burna Boy) should say. The route would be “Ta”. states. “I…I…” That may be the genre’s downfall, because there is strength in numbers. Just say, “We…” and that’s fine. The moment you become “me…me…me,” you have a problem. I don’t think[the statement]is entirely true, but like I said before, he’s entitled to his opinion. It depends on what you see as material. ”
“…everyone has a role to play when it comes to bringing it into music. You just have to understand that this is a building phase. It’s going to be bigger than this, but the only way , we all play our part. That’s the best way I can explain it in a way that everyone can understand.”
