The federal opposition coalition has revealed that there is a conspiracy between some governors and 24 state party chairmen of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to extend the term of office of the party‘s acting national chairman, Umar Damagum, until 2027. claimed that there was.
The lawmakers made the accusation at a press conference in Akokwa, Imo State on Sunday evening. They claimed that the move was a deliberate strategy to weaken the PDP and weaken its chances in future elections.
Mr. Ikenga Ugochinyere, the group’s spokesperson and member representing Ideato North/Ideato South Federal Constituency in Imo State, said: “Today, our country faces different economic and political challenges. But there is something missing in all these issues: a vibrant, responsive, and responsible opposition.
“We have the PDP that is supposed to lead the opposition, but what we have are political charlatans who are hijacking the pulse of the opposition and turning it into an errand for the ruling party.
“After the governors meeting in Jos yesterday, some people called me and said the PDP is over. Alex Ekwueme, Jerry Gana, Atiku Abubakar, Olusegun Obasanjo and many other founders. It is a great shame that the political party that was established in 1998 through the great efforts of the fathers of the United States came together to bring an end to 16 years of military rule.
“That political party is what they are playing in Akala. Mr. Umaru Damagun and Mr. Samuel Anyanwu are now trying to ruin and forget the sacred expectations of the Nigerian people.”
He claimed that there was a perfect plan to prevent the National Executive Committee from selecting a substantive chairperson from the North Central region as originally intended.
He added: “They want Umar Damagum to continue his prestige as the national chairman and remain in office until 2027, forcing us to have a weak presidential candidate.”
“We have fraudsters among us who have no honor or decency. The ruling party will now be mocking us for wanting to sabotage their own party.
“First, they said there would be a Salah holiday, but then they changed it. Since last year, they kept changing the NEC meeting. Until now, there was no NEC meeting. They gave various excuses. The national leaders of the PDP are in high spirits with the APC leaders and are going to London to meet with the APC leaders.”
He accused the party leadership of fostering a political alliance with the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Mr Nyesom Wike.
