Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors Forum Chairman Bala Mohammed has refuted recent allegations of rifts within the opposition party.
The Bauchi State governor made the remarks on Friday following a series of suspensions within the party leadership.
Naija News earlier reported that the PDP crisis escalated in the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) division on Friday morning.
A faction of the PDP loyal to Acting National Chairman Umaru Damagumu, in a statement on Friday morning, announced the suspension of the National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Debo Ologunagba, and the National Legal Adviser, Mr. Kamarudeen Ajibade (SAN).
This was disclosed by the PDP National Public Relations Director, Chinwe Norom, in a statement released early on Friday morning.
Later, another faction suspended the PDP National Chairman, Damagumu, on a statement by Ologunagba.
Nevertheless, a Federal High Court in Abuja has issued an order restraining the National Executive Committee (NEC) and Board of Trustees (BoT) of the PDP from removing Mr. Umaru Damagum as Acting National Chairman.
Justice Peter Riff ruled that Damagum should be the only recognized PDP national chairman until the party’s national convention scheduled for December 2025.
It is noteworthy that the crisis rocking the PDP began after the party’s presidential primaries ahead of the 2023 elections.
However, after holding a closed-door meeting with PDP officials at the Government House in Bauchi on Friday, Governor Mohammed reiterated that the party remains united and is committed to constructively resolving internal issues. .
Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum said: “I can say that we have met with the Acting National Chairman, discussed these situations extensively and agreed to work collaboratively with other party institutions, namely the BOT, members of the Governors’ Forum, the party caucus, etc.” It is the consultation between the Senate and the House of Representatives that will resolve all issues, and that is the main outcome of this visit.
“We will deepen our interests and cooperation so that all these problems that are degrading party members are resolved and nipped in the bud.”
“We have decided that from now on we will not allow any gaps and will ensure that all these issues are resolved.
“We do not recognize any faction. We are united and we will definitely solve all problems in the end.”
Mr. Muhammad confirmed that the PDP is keen to address its internal challenges by fostering cooperation among key stakeholders in the party.
He stressed that the final decision is not solely his responsibility but also involves other stakeholders such as the PDP Governors Forum, Board of Trustees (BOT), caucus and other party executives. .
Further, he said consultations are currently underway with his fellow PDP governors to ascertain further action.
“This will be a productive outing and I am confident that the party will come together to resolve all issues. We stand before other stakeholders to ensure that the party wins the 2027 elections. We have agreed to do whatever it takes to restore the party’s glory,” Muhammad declared.
