The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed confidence that the party will regain control at the federal level and produce more governors in the 2027 elections.
This was revealed on Sunday when the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) visited Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri at his rural home in Korokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area Sampo.
Speaking on behalf of the NWC, the National Treasurer, Alhaji Ahmed Yayale, said the cause for optimism was due to the discontent that had spread across the country due to the prolonged economic difficulties under the current administration.
He said, “The cry of hunger and poverty is too loud in this country.
“There is nothing stopping the PDP from producing a president and vice president in 2027. APC cannot go out to campaign because it will be stoned. Nigeria is in your hands. We need your help to save Nigeria.”
He added that the PDP remains the only viable opposition party that can save the country, warning that failure to seize power in 2027 could spell disaster for Nigeria’s democracy.
calls for unity and strengthening of the party
Yayale stressed the need for PDP governors to rally party members and work together towards realizing the party’s vision.
He also said the NWC would embark on a nationwide campaign to seek support ahead of the 2027 elections.
National Secretary Ude Okoye has reiterated the party’s determination to reposition itself as a credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“The NWC will take action to strengthen the party and ensure respect for the PDP and its governors,” he said.
Mr. Okoye commended Governor Diri for his leadership and development achievements in Bayelsa State, describing him as an example of good governance.
In response, Governor Dowe Diri stressed the importance of unity among party members and urged them to prioritize the collective interests of the PDP over personal ambitions.
“As governors, we have to work closely together. We have to do the right thing without caring whose cow is being stabbed. If the PDP is in our hands If we die, posterity will not forgive us,” Diri said.
He called on party members to avoid divisive actions, such as frequent court cases over disputes, and instead seek consensus as an alternative way to resolve issues.
Mr Diri also expressed support for the idea of forming a mega-political party with the PDP at its core to highlight it as a strong force to regain power in 2027.
He said: “We cannot be in the PDP during the day and in another party at night.
“To save the country from its current slump, we need to cleanse the party and strengthen it.”
The visit also included condolences to Governor Diri over the recent deaths of former Deputy Inspector General of Police Moses Gituboh and Commissioner for Women Affairs Elizabeth Bidei.
