Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has called for strategic partnerships and sustainable expansion of health initiatives in Nigeria to improve the health status of Nigerians.
Obi, who was the presidential candidate of the Labor Party in Nigeria’s last elections, made the speech during a visit to the Sir Emeka Okwosa Foundation (SEOF) and its partner Dame Irene Okwosa Memorial Hospital (DIOMH) in Oraifite, Ewusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State. Mr. Obi’s visit is scheduled from September 19th to October 12th with SEOF’s ongoing pediatric/adult open heart surgery in partnership with the Vincent Obioma Ohaju Memorial (VOOM) Foundation This was made possible through medical missions held twice a year.
Mr. Obi commended SEOF and VOOM’s achievements in the past two years, including 117 open heart surgeries, 10 catheter surgeries (the first of its kind in South East Nigeria) and 2 vascular surgeries.
He expressed satisfaction with the efforts of the partners and urged them to continue contributing to the development of Nigeria’s health sector.
He stressed the urgent need to scale up these medical operations so that more lives are saved and more vulnerable Nigerians are provided with better health services.
Mr. Obi spoke of “sustainable collaboration between governments, the private sector, and philanthropic organizations to ensure the sustainability and expansion of health care efforts that address the cardiovascular needs of both children and adults.”
The Executive Director of SEOF, Mrs. Chidinma Okoye, thanked Mr. Peter Obi for his visit and for believing in the impact the Foundation is having on the lives of Nigerians.
Okoye said the procedures performed at DIOMH provided critical medical intervention to children and adults who otherwise would not have access to life-saving care.
She said the partnership and support they have received is helping them provide life-saving care to those in need.
“But as your Excellency pointed out, this is just the beginning. We invite you to join us in our mission to save lives. Together, we will help thousands more across Nigeria.” We can build a healthier future for children and adults alike,” she said.
