Reports have revealed that some politicians are trying to influence voters through food and cash distribution ahead of the Ondo State gubernatorial election to be held this Saturday.
Naija News learned that various political parties are providing essential items such as rice, noodles, maize and fertilizer to communities in a last ditch effort to woo voters across the state.
Some voters alerted Daily Trust to tactics being used by political parties to gain votes.
In Ifedor LGA, community leader Joseph Ayeni said leading political parties distributed rice and noodles to local residents as a gesture of goodwill from candidates.
“They came to our community with packs of noodles and bags of rice and handed them out from their bus saying it was from the gubernatorial candidate,” Ayeni said.
“We shared the rice, and the women shared the noodles.”
Additionally, certain political factions provide financial support to encourage voters to support their affiliated campaign organizations whenever local residents gather to hear candidates discuss their strategies and initiatives. It is reported that they are handing out gifts.
One farmer, who requested anonymity, said his region gets corn, agricultural supplements and even pesticides from other political groups.
“They handed out these items during the election campaign, saying they couldn’t visit us unless they brought us something,” the farmer told the press, adding that not all residents benefited equally. He added that there was no.
As this pattern of behavior accelerates, election monitoring group Yaaga Africa has raised concerns about the use of incentives to encourage voting.
In Akure, Safiya Bichi, who heads the Yaaga Africa team focused on knowledge, management and learning, has provided examples of money in exchange for votes in various local government areas such as Akure South, Ifedor and Owo. emphasized.
Bici said party leaders were working with local residents to distribute food and funds with the aim of influencing the election outcome.
He condemned the practice, noting that tensions were rising as political parties accused each other of vote rigging.
“This situation highlights the need for vigilance and peaceful action,” Bici said.
He called on security agencies to take proactive steps to ensure safe and fair elections.
“Ensuring the safety of voters, election officials, and participants is critical to maintaining election integrity. Precautions are essential to avoid violence and ensure peaceful elections. ” Bichi added.
