The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has debunked its plea to former President Goodluck Jonathan to hold the 2027 presidential election on the party’s platform.
Naija News reports that the PDP National Publicity Deputy Secretary General Ibrahim Abdullahi said in an interview with BBC Hausa that the party has not issued a presidential ticket to Mr. Jonathan.
Revealing an earlier interview regarding the alleged invitation to the former president, Abdullahi said the PDP was doing enough for Jonathan and there was no way to woo him as a member of the party.
He also questioned why the opposition would persuade Mr Jonathan, highlighting that the former president’s wife, Patience Jonathan, had vowed that her husband would not return to the presidential villa.
Abdullahi explained that party leaders have not yet discussed the issue with Jonathan, adding that the party has 12 governors and many other prominent politicians who are qualified and capable to contest the presidential election. said.
He said, “Reports that the PDP issued a presidential ticket to former President Goodluck Jonathan or invited him to contest the 2027 presidential election are not true.”
“What happened was that I did an interview with a journalist and we discussed some issues. But in the course of the interview, he mentioned President Jonathan and said that he was being urged to run for president. We asked for our opinions on President Jonathan.
“I replied that he (Jonathan) is entitled to stand for election because he is a Nigerian and has the right to contest elections according to the provisions of the law, and he still has one term left. Therefore, there is nothing wrong with him contesting the presidential election as he is legally qualified.
“His wife did not leave anything in the villa that would lead people to believe that her husband would run for president and that he would return to run for president. It wasn’t until recently that my wife said, “So how can we consider him? We’ll give away tickets to anyone who shows interest.”
