Kenneth Okonkwo, a former spokesperson for the Obi Datti campaign organization, has said that opposition politicians are moving towards the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to use state institutions to rig the 2027 elections. said.
Barrister Okonkwo said that under free and fair elections, the ruling APC would not get any votes from the people.
He said this in an interview with Arise TV on Monday. Mr. Okonkwo maintained that the 2023 election results do not reflect what happened at polling stations across the country on election day.
The Nollywood legend explained that the current electoral system makes it impossible to run as an opposition party in Nigeria.
“Would you be the ruling party or the opposition in a country where there are no elections at all? What I want to say is that I was a spokesperson in the 2023 election, but in the 2023 election says unequivocally that it did not reflect anything that took place on the ground.
“To date, has INEC presented the voting results per voting unit for the 2023 presidential election? The law says that is what they should do. Articles 62, 2 and 3 of the Electoral Law , did they show that?” Okonkwo asked.
He claimed that the politicians who defected to the APC want the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to cooperate with them in 2027.
The former APC leader stressed that unless INEC conducts free and fair elections, the opposition parties will remain submissive.
“Right now, the opposition parties are coming on board with the ruling party, but they don’t want to because the fact is that they need the ruling party to use INEC and the security agencies to rig elections. Never approach an APC with a long rope.
“Unless we start holding free, fair, credible and verifiable elections, there is no such thing as a ruling party or an opposition party, because that is a pillar of democracy. What the opposition is doing is rigging the 2027 elections. “It’s running to the ruling party to use state power structures to manipulate,” he said.
